Comment on Tasting Dinner: Judges Hotel, Yarm, 29th February 2008 by Peter

Well the tasting went well, and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal - the presse was a superb match to the Morey Chassagne, which was in great condition (though I had a spare bottle on hand just in case !). Also notable was that the Gachot-Monot, although notably lighter-bodied, was not a disappointment after the Nuits and Volnay. A great affirmation of its QPR.

To test your brain cells, here is the quiz the guests attacked :

1	Who was largely responsible for the planting and development of the vineyards of Burgundy ?
a)	The Dukes of Burgundy
b)	Charlemagne the Great
c)	The monks of Citeaux and Cluny

2	What proportion of Burgundy production is “Grand Cru”
a)	0.5%
b)	2%
c)	5%

3	How much wine does Burgundy’s Cote d’Or produce ?
a)	About as much as Tasmania
b)	About as much as Victoria
c)	About as much as all of Australia

4	Name the six allowed grape varieties of the Cote d’Or appelations.

5	When are the best Grand Cru red wines at their peak ?
a)	3 to 8 years
b)	6 to 15 years
c)	10 to 30 years

6	Which of these is NOT a village of the Cote d’Or ?
a)	Brochon
b)	Fixin
c)	Givry

7	Which is regularly the most expensive Grand Cru of Burgundy ?
a)	Chambertin
b)	Romanee-Conti
c)	Musigny

8	The finest wines of Burgundy are sometimes regarded in economic terms as “Veblen Goods”. What does this mean ?

9	When buying Burgundy which is the most important factor to consider ?
a)	Vintage
b)	Village/Vineyard
c)	Producer
