The Pousse d'Or estate is famous for its Volnays, but also has two well-situated parcels of 1er Cru Santenay. The Clos des Tavannes lies at the very northern end of Gravieres, up near the border with Chassagne. This is good ground, with a sparse gravelly topsoil, and is usually regarded as the best of Santenay. The wines are typically firm and meaty, but with rather better poise than most Santenays, and have been likened to Volnay. The 1993 is drinking very nicely, in a firm and rustic style.

HPB Note

Medium ruby touched with garnet; broad paler rim showing some brick. Wild woodland nose - sousbois and brambles - with a lovely rustic leathery tone, just perked up by a trace of bright, fresh, red fruit. Mouth entry is plump and smooth but edged with crisp acidity - this sits in the mouth as a whole with a solid, rustic, red fruit. Well balanced, though slightly coarse, finish of good length.

Good colour. Fresh, round, plump nose. Very good fruit here. Medium full. Good tannins. Quite good grip. But stylish and generous if not that intense. Finishes fragrant and complex and long. Stylish for a Santenay.
