 Nuances of white flowers and subtle wood spice adds interest to the predominant aromas of pear and white peach that continue onto the elegant, pure and unusually fine flavors that culminate in a linear and beautifully well-focused finish. Despite the solid focus, this is relatively generous in the context of the vintage and delivers terrific quality at this level with the balance to age over the medium term. Recommended.

91-93
The 2004 Clos de la Barre had been racked and assembled only the day before my visit, and yet the wine was amazingly showing pretty well. As with the caveat with the two wines above, I can only imagine that the wine is significantly better than my tasting note. The nose is discreet, but excellent, offering up a blend of apples, tangerine, chalk, marzipan, vanillin oak and plenty of other mineral tones. On the palate the wine is more upset than on the nose, and while it is hard to gauge its depth and intensity today, the long, soil-driven finish speaks volumes for the ultimate quality of the wine. I would firmly expect it to merit a score in the 91-93 range when it is back on form after its bottling.

Peach, orange and nuts on the nose. Round, fat, sweet and rich in the mouth, with very ripe citrus flavors. Wonderfully broad and full for the vintage but not at all heavy. Finishes ripe, fruity and long. This is about 13% natural alcohol. Lafon, who is a great fan of the 2004 vintage, believes that these wines will at some point go through "an ugly stage," but they are certainly delicious today.
