#658425. 1993 - Giaconda - Ovens Valley (VIC) Pinot Noir - 75cl VAT & duty paid
Giaconda is an Autralian icon, with a 5* rating from James Halliday. It was established in 1982 by engineer turned winemaker Rick Kinzbrunner, and the first wines were released in 1987. The vineyards are on cool, south-facing slopes at 400 m altitude, helping to give finesse to the wines. In the early 1990s the total production was around 1000 cases, only a tiny proportion of which was Pinot Noir, with plantings of only half a hectare. Robust, rustic and fully mature, this is lovely wine and (dare I say it ?) very Burgundian.

HPB Note
**
Not quite decanted cleanly. Almost bricked throughout, just some ruby in the core. Very earthy nose, showing some candied strawberry fruit, and a little stalkiness. Very harmonious rustic style. Mouth entry is silky-smooth and pure with good acidity and great, earthy, sousbois bordering on the barnyard. The sweet, light, redcurrant fruit is playing second fiddle here. Well balanced, modest finish.
