1999 - Francois Jobard - Blagny 1er Cru La Piece sous le Bois - 75cl ex-VAT
#231193. 1999 - Francois Jobard - Blagny 1er Cru La Piece sous le Bois - 75cl ex-VAT

The tiny village of Blagny lies high up, above the main vineyard slopes, between Meursault and Puligny. Almost all the white wines made here are sold as Meursault or Puligny (both village and 1er cru), leaving the reds to carry the banner for the commune. These are rustic wines - often with a sense of sturdiness, although they seldom carry much weight - which age surprisingly well. Jobard's example is "proper old-fashioned" Burgundy made with the stems and in a good vintage like 1999 will keep and keep.

HPB Note
**
Medium ruby just touched with tawniness. Broad paler rim showing a little brick. Lovely fresh, perfumed nose showing bright raspberry fruit, flowers, grass and a fecund earthiness. Quite high-toned though. Mouth entry is supple and yet fresh, and not too acidic. Fairly light mid-palate shows good chewy texture and some warmth over lovely raspberry fruit and a touch of chocolate. Good weight and nicely rustic. Bare **.

89

Deeply colored, almost black and easily the darkest young Jobard red I have ever seen. Explosive aromas of black cherry fruit and the barest hint of oak merge into big, robust, rich, earthy flavors that despite the size and weight, manage to retain good precision. The tannins are buried but clearly there and it will require 5 to 8 years of bottle age to fully resolve them and perhaps longer. This is an intense wine and for those who are accustomed to the Jobard emphasis on finesse and elegance, the '99 is not cut from that cloth. Impressive in several ways, especially compared to the typical Blagny rouge but I actually prefer the style of the 2000 even though there is no question that the '99 has more potential.
