2011 - Moreau, Bernard - Chassagne-Montrachet
2011 - Moreau, Bernard - Chassagne-Montrachet

I strongly recommend the beautiful Chassagne wines of Bernard Moreau (actually of course of his sons Alex and Benoit). I must confess that I had not crossed paths with this domaine until last winter when a friend said "come along, let's go and see my mate Alex". It was a revelation - as Bill Nanson wrote "I'm surprised that the name of this domaine isn't on the tips of more people's tongues."

Early picked, and aged in barrel (but only 25% new in the 1ers and that with light toast) and with no lees stirring, the wines turn out full of energy, pure, mineral and with a power and intensity that transcends their level.Alexandre Moreau has lengthened the élévage process over the last few years, looking for greater length, minerality and complexity, and seems to me to be hitting the ball out of the park.

John Gilman too is a fan: "The 2011s chez Moreau are stellar wines, with great purity of fruit and stunning underlying expressions of terroir … remarkable for their zesty, vibrant acidities (which are not always the norm in this very suave, but sometimes, very forward, white Burgundy vintage), and the glorious floral aspect found in so many of these wines is yet another indication that Alexandre Moreau has absolutely nailed the vintage and made a great range of white wines"

An expressive and broad-ranging nose features notes of resin, fennel, white orchard fruit and apricot hints. There is plenty of punch and good if not special delineation to the focused and solidly voluminous flavors that also display a saline hint on the moderately long and reasonably well-layered finish. (Drink starting 2017)

In my experience, the Domaine Moreau Chassagne villages is one of the very best AC bottlings in the Côte de Beaune, and this is a wine I enjoy drinking very much in its elegant youth and look for often on restaurant wine lists. The 2011 is probably the most refined young vintage of this wine that I have yet had the pleasure to taste, offering up a beautiful nose of delicious apples, pear, lemon zest, a fine base of soil, white flowers and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and impressively complex, with a fine core, crisp acids and lovely backend mineral drive on the long and supremely elegant finish. This is not your uncle’s chunky Chassagne AC from deep, clay soils, but a wine of cut, breed and class that shows an awful lot of terres blanches finesse- even if I am not certain of the soil composition of the parcels from which this wine hails- they are probably all clay, knowing my Irish luck!! But, you get the idea, this is a very classy and elegant example of Chassagne villages. (Drink between 2014-2030)

The 2011 Chassagne-Montrachet has a lovely immediacy to it. Almond, hazelnut and spice notes add complexity to the pliant, expressive finish. This approachable Chassagne is best enjoyed over the next few years. The Chassagne was bottled just before the Christmas holiday. (Drink starting 2014)
