2008 - Rhys Alesia - Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
2008 - Rhys Alesia - Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Rhys is the passion and adventure of Kevin Harvey, a Californian IT entrepreneur and Burgundy aficionado who is committed to making the finest possible wines of distinctive terroir in California. In 2001 he began planting on very carefully selected sites, and the first Rhys wines were released in the 2004 vintage. These are wines of intensity and elegance, that stand on their own ground - neither trying to be Burgundy, nor anything like most Californian Pinots.

The Alesia wine is made with purchased grapes, but with the same philosophy as the estate grown wines – concentration from low yields and pure, fresh fruit flavors. The grapes for this wine are sourced mainly from the Falstaff Road Vineyard, near Freestone - one of the coolest Pinot growing regions in the world. Combined with classic Goldridge soils, this is a beautifully balanced and fresh example from the “true” Sonoma Coast, just a few miles from the Pacific.

A ripe and very pretty nose artfully blends both red and blue pinot fruit that is trimmed in subtle violet and mint hints that leads to round and rich middle weight flavors that possess fine intensity and volume on the solidly long finish. This delicious offering could easily be enjoyed now but should also age well. (Drink starting 2013)

The Alesia Sonoma Coast pinot is made from purchased grapes and is a bit higher in octane than most of the Rhys estate bottlings, as the 2008 comes in at 13.9 percent. I like this wine very much for its aromatic complexity and purity, but this is a decidedly more fruit-driven style of wine than the estate bottlings, with the underlying soil more sandy tones than the striking mineral drive of so many of the Rhys bottlings. The nose offers up a deep and complex mélange of cherries, fresh herb tones, vinesmoke, a nice bit of soil and a touch of graphite in the upper register from the new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and bouncy, with some classic Sonoma weediness, a good core of fruit, bright acids and good length and grip on the modestly tannic finish. This is a very tasty bottle. (Drink between 2010-2025)

Vivid red. Strawberry, raspberry and spicecake on the nose, with a sexy sandalwood quality. In a distinctly vibrant style, with the sexy spice and red berry qualities following through in the mouth. Sappy and fine-grained wine, finishing on a suave note of candied flowers. This will be the last vintage for this wine. Josh Raynolds
